Last night was a crazy one. I watched everything. I watched the TV. I watched the comments on Facebook. I watched my beer refill itself over and over. In the end it wasn’t meant to be, but that was one of the most heartfelt losses I’ve ever seen. Those young players left everything on the field last night. They did it for themselves, the school they love, and of course every drunken Iowa fan across the nation.
To see the articles about the bars not having enough beer for all the Iowa fans made me smile. They really had no idea what was coming when Iowa went 12-0. Send your best and brightest they say, well Iowa did just that. And then some. How you going to run out of beer?? You’re a BAR. You’ve got one job to do. They forgot about Vern. You can’t drink all day if you don’t start in the morning!
I don’t watch a lot of college football and usually watch the bowl games or what not when the end of the season comes about. This season with Iowa going 12-1 was truly something special and every Iowan should be proud of that team. They accomplished something we see in movies, read about in books, and just plain don’t see all the time. In this time of big name coaches, 5 star recruits, and schools that sell their souls to have winning football teams it is very refreshing to see a school like Iowa compete and compete well.
They were very close to winning that game last night, and in my opinion proved to a nation that they belonged. In a game of inches, that was all it would have taken. To simply stop them a few inches short in what was a truly gallant effort by a defense. All the headlines are about MSU and that final drive, but what I saw was a group of men that were exhausted, beat up, and yet playing their hearts out. The defense refused to give up, refused to allow that touchdown, and did everything in the world to stop it only to come up a few inches short. It was truly inspiring.
So for a state that people talk shit about, a school nobody thought could get it done, and for all the beer drinkers in America that need to recognize I say GREAT JOB HAWKEYES!! You made your fans happy & proud, but you also made all of us with roots from Iowa proud. For a whole year Hawkeye fans get to walk a little taller, smile a little bigger, and certainly talk shit to NE, MN, Northwestern, and all the other suckers (Not including WI) they beat along the way.
I watched the game in North Carolina with strangers although I really wanted to be back in Traer with old friends watching and cheering, but like always I made new friends. Those new friends had a great respect for what that Iowa team had accomplished and it made me feel a sense of pride although I hadn’t done a damn thing. So as someone that simply loved watching the game and in the end felt some true Iowa pride from it, I want to say THANK YOU to a football team that inspired a state, a nation, and a drunken guy in Charlotte, NC.
