Change

Hump day!! Que the camel. Those commercials are great. The first time I saw it I thought “this is stupid” and then I was bombarded with it 79 times a day for 3 years straight until I started to yell “HUUUMMMP DAAAY” in the office. We fear change no matter what it is, distrust the unknown, and simply accept what is normal EVEN if it isn’t good for us. Why Bucky? What did I tell you yesterday about asking me questions?? Don’t worry I already forgot too.

Fearing the unknown is in our DNA. We are programmed to just go with what we know. That is why advertisers spend BILLIONS of dollars every year to show you their product over and over again. Insurance agencies (I hate them), food, beer, and on and on do this because they know if they get you to buy just one time you are likely to simply choose their product the next time instead of trying something new. Every thing you do has been calculated, discussed, and agreed upon in a board room somewhere two years before you make that decision. Creepy huh.

I recently heard a quote that has stuck with me and I’m going to share it with you. For free. Don’t worry I don’t expect you to do anything with it. Heck I’m surprised you have spent 45 seconds reading this blog. Please do not panic I assure you that video of puppies licking windows will can be there when you be done getting more smarter by reading this. Yeah I wrote it that way on purpose. Ready for some mind blowing knowledge? “If you’re not changing it, you’re choosing it.” Read it again.

When you accept something that means you are choosing it. I accept my salary. I accept my job. I accept my body. I accept my childrens behavior. That means you choose those things. No I don’t Bucky!! I want a better paying job, I want better health, I want my children to not act like a-holes…. You can say those things, but the facts are simple and everyone can see them. If you aren’t actively working to change the things in your life it proves you made the decision you like them the way they are. Yeah, I had to realize I was making crap decisions for myself too, but the revolution came once I had the epiphany that I held the power to improve EVERYTHING.

I just like this picture of Annie from yesterday so I added it. Back to actual blog now….

A simple 15 minute workout. Reading a book for an hour at night instead of watching a Criminal Minds rerun (love that show) for the 9th time. Putting the beer down and spending time with kids doing something constructive instead of leaving them to fend for themselves until bedtime. I’m not a parent, but it doesn’t take a genius to know kids just want you to pay attention to them and will do whatever it takes to get time from you. Why not make it positive is all I’m saying?

If you’re not changing it, you’re choosing it. I know you didn’t read it again like I told you so I decided to write it again. It is cool the more I write it the more I will follow my own advice. I write for me and simply decide to share with you. I choose to lead by example in everything I do. I’m most accountable to myself and believe you should do the same. Stop worrying about what other people think because they don’t give a crap about you. In fact they want you to suck. It makes them feel better about their crap decisions. The best thing you can do to get back at anyone that ever doubted you is to succeed and become amazing! I promise that will never happen if you don’t start doing something different.

FRUIT STICKER

Change. We all fear it. Even I. I love seeing and experiencing new things, but in my comfort zone I like it the same. As we get older we appreciate things more (hopefully) and with that we tend to feel safer with things we are familiar with. Don’t feel bad it is natural and in my opinion, which means nothing, normal. A a quick side note on the things I write. My opinion is mine and I share it in hopes of making others think about what THEIR opinion is. Never let people you don’t know influence your opinion because I assure you they are not thinking you. Okay now back to change. You might have some in your sofa.

I saw a news clip a few years ago that stayed with me for some reason. I think it was just so random, but it made me think which is my favorite type of stimulation. The news crew was talking to shoppers coming out of a grocery store asking this question. “Would you rather have stickers on your fruit and veggies or a laser imprint??” My first thought was NO. I don’t want no mind control crap going into my fruit and vegetables that I never eat. The man isn’t going to sneak that one by me. I’m way too smart for them.

Now I’m older and buy apples, tomatoes, and other stuff multiple times a week. I make the world’s best salsa by the way. Legit. Now I don’t care if I’m being watched by the man from my Envy apples. Did you know the more little white spots on an apple the sweeter it is? At least that is what the sign at Trader Joe’s said. I love that grocery store. Off topic again. If you chop up fresh fruit and veggies the stickers suck. I forget to take them off sometimes, you gotta dig them off with a finger nail, then you gotta stick them somewhere, and to be perfectly clear, I hate those bastards so much. Laser everything. No more eff’in stickers.

This includes people. We can meet someone that is outside our normal and think whew what a piece of work he/she is, but once we are around them more we start to see benefits of a new different friend. By different I mean someone with new crazy ideas, stories, experiences, dreams, perspectives, and love. Try to remember that change slash new isn’t always bad, but an opportunity to that might make things easier and more fun. I’ve found no matter where someone comes from, no matter what they look like, who they sleep with, how they got to me, I can make them smile. I’m pretty amazing like that.

The world is pretty eff’in awesome and full of many different fruits and vegetables. I believe it would be a real shame to not at least try all of them at least once.

Be kind to each other and do random acts of kindness expecting nothing in return.

We Are Not that Busy

Playoff football. Was supposed to be the Packers playing this evening in a fairytale, but real life is anything but. Happy endings are for Asian massages and Hollywood movies. Part of being an adult is learning that lesson over and over again until you accept that most times things just don’t go your way. I have learned this lesson the hard way, but lucky for me I’m a forever optimist. That doesn’t mean I have I have naive smile on my face 24/7, but it does mean I’m willing to give life another shot to be awesome every single day. It also means manifesting your own awesomeness to combat the forces around you trying to take your happy ending.

I travel a lot covering the Carolinas for my business. I enjoy it and when I’m on the road there is no quit at 5 PM. I mean I could, but that seems silly to me. Most people are gone during the day and get home around 5 PM so I usually make appointments with them in the late evening to do deliveries or evaluations. I am blessed to represent some amazing companies that make high end products making peoples lives easier and more fulfilling. I use some of these products, I love them, and I have the ability to talk with someone for 5 minutes while looking at their environment to tell them exactly what would help them the best. I know because I’ve done it all.

This last week was no different. I did an eval with a wonderful lady for the VA and then dropped a shower chair off with a Veteran and his spouse/caregiver at their home. The wife came out and helped me get the chair out of the back of my van and then we took it inside for some training. Of course Annabel made her presence known, but had to wait in the car for this delivery. The family had three little yappi dogs inside that make a lot of noise. I do the training and with the clock hitting about 7 pm I was ready to get to my hotel room for the night. The spouse follows me outside as it is clear she is lonely and it is nice to have someone to talk with. Her husband of 40 plus years has ALS and it is pretty far along. That disease is horrible. Just horrible.

I’m tired though. Annie got herself out of the van and of course had a frisbee in her mouth. My new friend is throwing the frisbee 5 ft and of course Annabel is happy to get it over and over and over and over…. I’m annoyed. I was thinking this was the 1-2 minute chat that lead to the goodbye, call me if you have questions, and have a nice night talk. The lady apologized for playing with Annie and I said “it’s okay” even though I didn’t mean it. My body language was all leave me alone. I’m watching her throw the frisbee and she had this incredible genuine smile. I stared at it and my life instantly changed. Thank goodness because I was on the wrong path. That smile fixed me even though I didn’t know I was broken. Truth is like many of you, I was very broken.

This lady, fellow human, and complete stranger needed me and Annie that night. Annabel was up to the task, but my dumb butt missed all the signs. The smile snapped me out of it. I thought to myself, “ What is your problem?? Let her play with Annie and have a moment.” My body language instantly changed. I was Bucky again. My smile became genuine as I gave her tips on how to throw it farther and to throw it away from Annie so she has to chase it down. She went from saying “I’m sorry” to “this is the best day I’ve had in a long time.” Think about that. My crabby butt almost stole this great moment from a very kind woman that simply needed a break from the monotonous daily routine she had fallen into. Caring for an ALS patient isn’t easy and I can only imagine how hard it is when that patient is your husband/loved one. At her age trying to lift a man out of bed, into his chair, onto toilets, shower chairs, and everything else takes a toll.

I watched her start laughing and having real fun. Annabel played her role perfectly like usual. I got on board, grabbed a water bottle, and put out a water bowl knowing this is where I am supposed to be for now. Out of everything that happened this last week, I’m most proud of this moment, the one I didn’t want. You don’t have to wear a cape to be a hero to someone. You can change the world in a few minutes by simply being more selfless with your time. You aren’t that busy. You aren’t that important unless you are a brain surgeon and your patient is about to die. If that is the case you should probably get going.

I share these moments to remind myself and hopefully get you to think differently when you’re out there in the world. Small moments can create big happiness. What more can you ask for?? Allowing a lonely person to play frisbee with Annie took no real effort on my part, but it did have an large impact on this woman’s life. That is a win.

Love Who You Are Today, Tomorrow Is Not Guaranteed.

I love you all and appreciate everyone that reads this. Your text messages, comments, and the rest mean so much to me. I put all of who I am in these blogs so it is nice to hear when people appreciate the messages, enjoy reading them, and then let me know. The best way to support is share the blogs, subscribe to have them emailed to you directly, and most importantly think about how you can make one moment a day better. Just one. Then watch your world begin to change.

Honor Them Everyday

I am a bit late posting. Still a great point for you to think about.

Memorial Day. An important one. All days are a blessing, but on this day we as Americans honor the bravest people we will never see or meet. The men that stormed the beach in Normandy is only one example of the incredible sacrifice humans are capable of. I can’t imagine at 18 years old being told to run towards a wall of bullets. Have you ever thought about that?? I’m guessing no. You’re too busy calling strangers racist because they have different opinions than you. Do the world a favor and shelf that BS for today. I think about the kids that gave everything 90 years ago so you can stand on your pedestal and say America sucks. That being said these kids didn’t die for you to blindly follow the other side either.

No wall of bullets to charge today Bucky. How can we make a difference?? Glad you asked. Make your community better. Be a good neighbor, friend, Parent, Spouse, son, brother, daughter that used to be a son, or whatever you want. You can try to be 2nd best Uncle ever, but the top spot is all mine. Just be good to others. Not for recognition, but for the simple fact it is the right thing to do. We can all make a difference. Imagine what your life would be like if everyone on your block cared more about others than they do for themselves.

I have a point that I’m working towards here. Just trying to give you a moment to think about the military people and their families. Family. That is an awesome word. I’ve been blessed with a very big family that is amazing. It is far from perfect, but at the end of the day we are all there for each other. I don’t have children, but I spend as much time as I can with my nieces and nephews. I know a lot of people say they don’t know how to talk with kids. It is easy. Just pay attention to them. That is what we all want in life. To feel important, wanted (think kids, to be wanted as in join in the game), to feel appreciated (again kids – nice pass or catch), and all the rest. Be kind to your kids. They are the ones that will pick your nursing home.

I was playing frisbee with Annie in the park we go to daily for that purpose. We spent about an hour and half today. Lots of rest and water breaks. Right about an hour into it I see a couple dressed up as super heroes pushing their young kids in little plastic cars. Annabel was happy to show off her frisbee skills which are flipping awesome as this family walked by. I asked what was up?? I double checked before yelling out that today is not Halloween. In case you’re not sure either – it is not Halloween today. After I yelled ”Where you going??” I got the best reply. ”To save the world!!” I laughed and told them they made my day.

This parental unit took time to put the cape on, the mask on, and made sure the parent-mobile (like the batmobile, but not) had a full tank. I find this to be awesome. This is what I mean by change the world. Those kids don’t care who the President is, they just want some attention. We make the world better one super hero costume at a time. Ready for the tie in??? We honor the men and women that gave their lives for our freedom, by becoming the best version of us that we can possibly be. You can’t thank a deceased Veteran for their service. We can keep their memory alive by being great people and teaching our kids how to be great people.

It isn’t enough to throw some meat on the BBQ and chug Busch Lights for the day. We need to honor those every single day and not just some weekend to kick off summer. Become an awesome person that makes a difference in the world. Take care of your kids. Teach them they can do anything because they are blessed to have been born in the greatest country in the history of the world. Be a great friend, a great son or daughter, be a great brother or sister so that you send out great vibes every single day. I try to do amazing things for people, but I fall short many times each day, week, year, or decade.

If you never come up short that just means your goals or dreams aren’t big enough. Think about what your philosophy for life is. If I came up and asked you ”What do you want to accomplish in this life??” Do you have an answer?? I think about those that gave everything so that I can be here in America doing whatever I want. I’m free to read any books, educate myself, go where I want, vote for who I want, advocate for things that I want or things I believe would make the world better.

I know I’m a couple days late on publishing this one, but that also makes my bigger point. You don’t get to change your profile pic that says thank you Veterans for a weekend and then tuck that away until next year. Join me in honoring their memory every day by becoming the best you.

RIP DMX

Hello blog readers! It is Monday. Fresh start. We will get to an amazing dog story here, but first I’d like to take a moment to remember DMX. I actually met him while in LA a little over 10 years ago. I drove up to Hollywood to try out for last comic standing. I was kicked out because I can’t stand. That is not even kinda true, but in this believe everything world go ahead and run with that. Ha. It rained HARD the entire drive up from San Diego which is obviously not the norm for Southern CA. I was on the elevator and noticed a couple walking towards the elevator. I didn’t see who it was until he and his woman were in the elevator. I had just held the elevator for DMX. Mind you this was when he was very famous.

I talked about the stupid rain and a couple other brief things that had nothing to do with him being DMX. We got to their floor and off they went with me wishing them a good night. I thought it was a cool thing and was looking forward to telling my friends about it. The next morning I went down to the lobby and there was DMX with about 4-5 other people. He was trying to fly one of those cheap remote control helicopters that were popular at that time. I’m not into bothering people just to say I did so I let him be. To my surprise he actually came up to me and introduced himself as X.

He was just a cool guy. We talked for about 10 minutes while I waited for my car to come up. My car never came. Turns out it had a flat tire in the parking garage. That was a bummer. You know I forgot about the flat tire part of that trip. Oh well it happens. I pride myself on being able to read people when I meet them. I can usually tell if I’m going to like someone within a few moments. I’m not as good as women when it comes to this as they know within 4.87 seconds if they will sleep with a guy upon meeting him. That whole first impression thing. Anyway I found DMX to be genuine and I thought it was pretty cool for him to leave his people behind to come talk with me for a few minutes. I honestly don’t remember what we talked about mainly because it didn’t matter. We were just a couple of guys bullshitting about anything and everything.

He left in a hurry though when I asked to borrow money. Okay that didn’t happen. We are still in Dog Week so I gotta bring this full circle yet. I did some reading about X the last couple days and turns out he had a tough time growing up. His real father was nonexistent and his Moms taste in men was simply put “Crap”. These men she brought into their lives were not good men. Each one treating DMX worst than the one prior. Turns out he spent a lot of time in the streets of New York. When he was young the Yonkers part of NYC was not a nice place to be. For a teenager to be out in those streets night after night had to be extremely hard.

It is said that he would befriend stray dogs finding food in dumpsters to give the dogs. Their loyalty and friendship was never in question. He was right. A lot of people find salvation in animals. They don’t judge, they don’t worry about bad decisions in your past, and they just want to make you happy. It is so genuine that anyone that could hurt them in anyway has no heart and is most certainly evil. I don’t know if you can come back from that. Michael Vick was a flipping psycho and the things he was found to be guilty of made my stomach turn. I hope for his soul he really did change inside.

I didn’t “know” DMX. I did meet him and have a 10 minute conversation with the guy. I liked him, but I tend to like everyone until you give me a reason to not like you. I look for the good in others. Everyone I meet I just assume they are one friend away from being great. I could be that friend. Think about that. You could too. All you have to do is say hello. Remind people that they are not alone on this life journey. It means more to people than you know. Ever had a complete stranger improve your day. I have and I look for opportunities everyday to do that for others. Get ready to have your mind blown!

Dogs do that naturally. It is in their DNA. They will run up to a stranger and beg to be petted. Ever seen a sad person petting a dog?? Nope it is an instant smile machine. I have a feeling that is what teenage DMX found in these stray dogs. We came up a step from yesterday. You don’t have to sniff a butt to be dog like, you simply have to find a way to make a stranger smile. Be that one friend that gets them over the hump. You’ll surprise yourself at how great you can be even when you’re not getting credit for it.

Be kind to each other, be kind to animals, and find ways to make the world smile. That is the secret formula to a fulfilling life.

***Some articles talked about DMX being involved in Dog Fights. I truly hope this was not the case. I didn’t see anything that was actual proof and in America you are innocent until proven guilty.***

Days

159337D3-4F9D-4F5B-A92C-598CCC5E6884Hello internet people.  It has been a while since I’ve shared with you.  I need to write more than I have been as I use it to get thoughts out of my head.  Right now I would like to share the way I think about days.  You see you only have so many days in your life.  I understood this at a very early age and decided to live my life accordingly.  I was having tea with my Grandfather when I was 15.  He was 80ish at this time and made the comment how he remembered being 15 like me, but then one day he woke up and was 80.  His voice trailed off as he said it and I understood at that exact moment how quickly life passes by.  I knew that I didn’t want to waste any days.

We all have no knowledge of what the future holds.  Will you live to be 80??  Will you die tomorrow in a car accident??  We all hope not, but either way we all die sometime which means you only have a set amount of days left.  What will you do with them???   Let’s use some easy numbers to drive my point home.   10,000 days is equal to around 27 years which puts me at 68 years old.  Still young to some and super old to others.  Okay now we have our days.

I want to ask a couple questions with the first being what did you do the last 10 days?? Did you work towards your goals???  Do you have goals??  Remember we only have 10,000 days to get it all done.  How many days did you lay on the couch all day??  How many did you chalk up to being a “bad day”??   Was it 2, 3, or maybe 5??  Let’s say 3 days fall into the couch/bad day category.  That is 30% or 3,000 of your remaining days.  Fuck.  I know, it is crazy when you think of it like that.

There is work also as most of us are not trust fund babies.  We work on average 260 days a year.  This on our 27 year plan is about 7,000 days.  So between bad days, couch days, and work days we just pissed away our entire 10,000 days.  That sucks.  So for the heck of it lets say you only work 4 days a week so we gain back 1,000 days.  How many of those days are you willing to piss away feeling sorry for yourself, wishing the past was different instead of concentrating on making the future awesome, and holding grudges that mean nothing instead of enjoying the people around you???

Maybe you want to spend your days being a victim, I’m a girl, I have a disability, I’m the wrong color, my sexuality holds me back, or some other BS that gets wrapped up in our heads.  I’m not saying those things aren’t real or even a problem, but allowing those things to dictate how we live our lives is bullshit.  Never let the stupidity or ignorance of others change your goals or how you enjoy life.  You only get so many days don’t give ANY to people that don’t deserve them.

What do you want to go see??   What do you want to learn??  Who would you like to meet?? These are the questions you should ask yourself every morning.  I personally am not willing to trade any days whining and complaining about things I can’t change.  It isn’t worth it.  One day God willing I will wake up and be 80.  My first thought on that day  needs to be “I’m sure glad I didn’t waste any days”…

Think about it.
