We have all said it. “I’d eff’ing die for you man.” A couple of tequila shots and we all become martyrs for the drunk idiot next to us. It is a kind thing to tell someone you care about. Verbalizing how much they mean to you, by stating you would lay down your life so that they may continue on. Almost brings a tear to my eye. Then I realize it is bullshit.
Ain’t nobody dying for you. This isn’t a Hollywood crap production that you get to be the hero by staying behind to hold off bad guys while your friends escape thru a secret tunnel. This is real life and the only absolute in it is that you will in fact die. Hopefully a long time from now after making many beautiful memories with people you care about. Notice I didn’t say after working many hours every week, buying a big house, and driving a fancy car.
I would like you to say this to people you care about. I will LIVE for you. Hmmm that doesn’t make any sense Bucky. I’m already living. Well like usual I will explain very clearly and try to do it without cursing because my Mom complains when I use colorful language. I’m 47 years old and my Mommy still tells me to watch my mouth. Only difference is I don’t get smacked when I reply “I can’t, my nose is in the way…”
Really think about it. Dying is easy. Everyone does it. Living is the hard one. Getting up at dawn everyday, putting on your Brunt work boots, and going to a job you don’t love so that your family will have food. Going to a 12 hour shift in the hospital. Homeschooling your children to make sure they are raised with the values you cherish. Simply spend time with your loved ones.
Say to those you love that “I WILL LIVE FOR YOU!! I will eat healthy and stay in shape for you. I will be sober and helpful for you. I will read books and make myself a better person for you. Wait….. You didn’t say there was work involved. Can we just go back to the secret tunnel??
The dying is the easy way out. Show those you love how much you truly care by staying alive and being present for them. Show up at their events. Listen to the story a 3 year old tells about the swimming pool in the hotel from 3 months ago. Be faithful and honest with your significant other. Use your actions in life to tell those you care about how much you love them.
I promise if you spend your days living for those you care about, you’ll never have to tell them you’d die for them.
