Change

Hump day!! Que the camel. Those commercials are great. The first time I saw it I thought “this is stupid” and then I was bombarded with it 79 times a day for 3 years straight until I started to yell “HUUUMMMP DAAAY” in the office. We fear change no matter what it is, distrust the unknown, and simply accept what is normal EVEN if it isn’t good for us. Why Bucky? What did I tell you yesterday about asking me questions?? Don’t worry I already forgot too.

Fearing the unknown is in our DNA. We are programmed to just go with what we know. That is why advertisers spend BILLIONS of dollars every year to show you their product over and over again. Insurance agencies (I hate them), food, beer, and on and on do this because they know if they get you to buy just one time you are likely to simply choose their product the next time instead of trying something new. Every thing you do has been calculated, discussed, and agreed upon in a board room somewhere two years before you make that decision. Creepy huh.

I recently heard a quote that has stuck with me and I’m going to share it with you. For free. Don’t worry I don’t expect you to do anything with it. Heck I’m surprised you have spent 45 seconds reading this blog. Please do not panic I assure you that video of puppies licking windows will can be there when you be done getting more smarter by reading this. Yeah I wrote it that way on purpose. Ready for some mind blowing knowledge? “If you’re not changing it, you’re choosing it.” Read it again.

When you accept something that means you are choosing it. I accept my salary. I accept my job. I accept my body. I accept my childrens behavior. That means you choose those things. No I don’t Bucky!! I want a better paying job, I want better health, I want my children to not act like a-holes…. You can say those things, but the facts are simple and everyone can see them. If you aren’t actively working to change the things in your life it proves you made the decision you like them the way they are. Yeah, I had to realize I was making crap decisions for myself too, but the revolution came once I had the epiphany that I held the power to improve EVERYTHING.

I just like this picture of Annie from yesterday so I added it. Back to actual blog now….

A simple 15 minute workout. Reading a book for an hour at night instead of watching a Criminal Minds rerun (love that show) for the 9th time. Putting the beer down and spending time with kids doing something constructive instead of leaving them to fend for themselves until bedtime. I’m not a parent, but it doesn’t take a genius to know kids just want you to pay attention to them and will do whatever it takes to get time from you. Why not make it positive is all I’m saying?

If you’re not changing it, you’re choosing it. I know you didn’t read it again like I told you so I decided to write it again. It is cool the more I write it the more I will follow my own advice. I write for me and simply decide to share with you. I choose to lead by example in everything I do. I’m most accountable to myself and believe you should do the same. Stop worrying about what other people think because they don’t give a crap about you. In fact they want you to suck. It makes them feel better about their crap decisions. The best thing you can do to get back at anyone that ever doubted you is to succeed and become amazing! I promise that will never happen if you don’t start doing something different.

Find Some Beauty

Happy Saturday friends. I woke up to 2” of snow again here in Charlotte. It is actually kind of fun and with my ”Companion” power add on I was able to take the same route as most days to walk the pup. She loves the snow. It is fun to watch her. Some of my friends made fun of me for buying her little boots to wear, but all of those friends will now have a rash because I paid a witch doctor to put a curse on them. The truth is who gives a shit what other people think. I’ve spent most of my life not giving an F. Without boots Annie is outside for maybe 5 min, but with them we spent almost an hour outside. She was happy. My face and hands have permanent frostbite and there is a good chance I’m actually frozen to my wheelchair. Dog is stoked though. If worrying about what others think makes you have a miserable 5 minute session in the snow compared to a super fun almost hour in the snow then it would seem an easy choice is upon you.

The other night I found some slushy ice in my apartment parking lot. It was in a part that gets very little sunlight and a good 4’ wide section behind the cars parked there. I was able to ”fishtail” my wheelchair using the scooter wheel thing. It was around 9 PM and I was laughing my ass off. It was so much fun. I turned around and did it again, and again, and again. I finally stopped when I went a little to far and almost flipped out of my chair. I was still laughing though. I’m sure people watching me do this think I’m insane, but I’m used to that.

I am not sure what I want to flip this all into. Getting around in a wheelchair with ice/snow,sleet is not easy. It would be very easy to allow this ruin my day, but I don’t. Why would I allow something I have zero control over ruin my attitude for the day?? I believe we all need to ask ourselves that question. It is okay to smile when the world is crumbling around you. It is okay to love someone full of hate. It is okay to forgive someone without making them feel like complete crap first. The world is full of beauty. It is everywhere. You just have to look for it.

The world is also full of crap. Loads of it. For some reason humans choose to see this world on a daily basis and I don’t understand why. They listen to the crap spewed out on TV. The pandemic, the evil republicans/democrats, the never ending drama, and all the other BS you allow into your head. This next sentence is important so pay attention. Make the choice to see the beauty all around you. Actively look for it instead of jumping on top of the first pile of crap you see. You don’t get it Bucky. There is nothing beautiful in my life. I don’t believe that simply because you are there, you are beautiful, and if you can’t see the beauty then create it.

When you create something beautiful the world gets a little bit better. Then next person that comes into that space will not focus on the pile of crap, but they will see you, the beauty that you are, and focus on the beauty you manifested. They will add to it. Creating a bigger beauty and soon with enough people the pile of crap will no longer exist. Don’t worry about what others are thinking. Be yourself, be kind to others, and actively work to make the world better every single day. When you do this I promise your life will change, the people around you will change, and this is how we change the world.

Don’t wait for someone else to do it. Stop fearing what other people will think. Be silly. Smile and wear the booties. Do some fishtailing in your wheelchair. Train yourself to see the beauty and not focus on the crap.

Elephants and Jigsaw Puzzles

2:59 AM. Seems to be a theme the last few months. My back decided to scream out at 2:24 and my only choice was to get up. It’s okay I was meaning to watch the SkinWalker Ranch show on History. That was sarcasm although now I want to know where all that damn water went. Guess you’ll have to watch too now. My brain wanders while I’m doing different things like taking Annie for walks. I don’t need all my brain power to throw the frisbee so it allows me to almost meditate while I throw the disc for her. I think of the “problems” I face daily and search for solutions. I like to do jigsaw puzzles and when I look for a new one I literally type “worlds hardest jigsaw puzzle” into google. The one I have now is awesome. I love to find answers. To look at things from multiple angles and learn from them. It is simply the way my brain works.

This current puzzle of just a bunch of lines drawn randomly (so it seems) looks to be impossible when a person first sees it. Well not to me, but we are about to get into that. I see a challenge. 1,000 pieces. The first thing is to get my first match or fit the first two pieces together. Boom not impossible anymore. I think well even if I only get one match per day I’ll be done in 1,000 days. When someone says that will take forever, well not anymore. 1,000 days is not forever. When I get two fits, then I think okay now it is only 500 days. This leads me to a couple metaphors that are popular. First one is how do you eat an elephant?? One bite at a time.

The other one I like a lot is imagine a giant ship like the one our friend from the last blog was stuck on. Big deal to turn that beast around. If you were to turn the Rudder only 1 degree to the right that massive ship would slowly start to turn. That ginormous ship will turn all the way around as long as you stay on the path. I use this analogy in my life. I don’t have to make a complete about face today. Just shift the rudder 1 degree and then stay with it. You can change your life with very little immediate sacrifice. Maybe tonight you only drink 5 beers instead of 6. Skip that last cigarette before bed. Ask your partner how their day was. Slow down slightly and let the car merge in front of you. You don’t have to become a different person overnight. All that you need is a willingness to try to change, and then follow thru.

I was planning to talk about a completely different angle on this whole puzzle thing, but I think I should split it up into multiple blogs. For today I think it is a perfect time to remind you that it is never to late to make a change. You don’t have to turn the ship around in one day. Just tweak the rudder a bit to the left or right. The change in direction will be slight at first, but soon you and others around you will start to see the shift. There are some people in your life that will be proud of you, some will be confused by you, and unfortunately there will be some people that want you to go back in the original direction. They don’t want you changing because it reminds them that they aren’t doing anything.

I am reminded of a time that a friend of mine after listening to “Jim Rohn – Excelling in the new millennium” decided to quit drinking for a week. A whole 7 days. For someone that drank daily the 7 days was a reasonable goal. It was insane to me how many of his friends could not handle it. They would show up with booze and say “come on” just have a couple with us. Good friends would respect his decision and help him reach a goal. He made it the week, but told me that he wouldn’t do it again. Kind of sad.

Ugh!! Twice now I have finished a blog only to have it not actually save so I have to write again. My frustration level is 1,000 right now. Oh well. Here is the point today. You can change. You can go the complete opposite direction you are currently on. it doesn’t have to be all at one time. Just make that 1 degree turn, put two pieces together, or simply start taking bites of the elephant. I have made a lot of mistakes in my life that I’m not proud of. I am proud that I paid attention and learned the lessons on these mistakes.

Don’t be afraid of the harder path. I could do easy puzzles, but I’ve already done that and so have you. Never underestimate your strength as we all have it inside us, but you have to test it, exercise it, and prove to yourself nothing is impossible. I wanted to start my own business and have. October will be 2 years. I am very proud of that. I wanted to write this blog more often and then make t-shirts. I am proud of that as well. I am in the process of starting a non-profit that will be making a film. More details on that in the future. Life is short, chase your dreams starting today, and never let anyone hold you back.

Remember to be kind. Be the person to give random smiles to strangers. A simple honest compliment can turn someone else’s day around. Most importantly you have to start whatever it is. Find two pieces that fit and boom you are on your way.

Poop Bag Character

I am a student of life. I’m amazed at the behavior of people and wonder about how they can be so lazy when it comes to thinking of others above themselves. I witness dozens of interactions every week that could go so much better if people simply took a moment to see how they can make the world better with a simple action. I do my best to think about other people and actively look to find a way I can do something for them making the world a tiny bit better. You don’t have to be Oprah and give everyone a free car to do something life changing for a stranger.

The other day I took Annabel out for a long walk. I usually take about 5 poop bags with me. Trust me this puppy is healthy and like her human Dad completely full of shit. Ha. Figured I’d get a ahead of that one. No softballs here buddy. I don’t usually need that many, but I would rather have extra than not enough. Old lessons from living on the farm. Always take an extra one or two because the one time you need them, you’re going to be real glad you did. I usually bag up the Annie treasures and then leave them on a corner or place I know I’m coming back to. No need to carry a poop bag around. On the way home after doing our laps thru the neighborhood I can grab all the bags and put them into the trash can.

The trash can is a dog poop station if you will. A pole with a trash can and the top of it has poop bags for people that don’t bring one with them. I always take them with me from my home and refill at the drop off, but hey I’m smart. So this particular day I made my deposit and noticed there were no more bags for other people. Not my problem right?? I turned and started rolling away, but that voice in my head said “You can do better Bucky.” The voice was right and I could do better. I had two unused bags in my pocket. I turned around and put those two bags in the empty box so that the next two people would have a bag. I was able to help two random people, but more importantly I was able to help keep my environment clean of dog poop.

It took almost no effort from me, no one would know what I did (until I share it here), and it helped someone else be a responsible person and pick up after their dog. I share because it really is that easy to be a good person. I hope that you go out and actively LOOK for places to make a positive difference in your neighborhood. People see you doing good things and it is contagious. I need no praise or someone to say good job, but what does make me feel proud is when others follow my lead. That means I’m doing my job as a human. This reminds me of a time I was dropping the nephews off at the airport.

We were checking in at the main area when some how the box of luggage tags got knocked over and spilled everywhere. I didn’t do it so it wasn’t my problem. I mean they have people that work there so I could just ignore it and go on with my life. Who cares if the line is super long and the guy behind the counter is doing all he can to move people thru faster. Now he has to pick up all these luggage tags while I watch. We both know that isn’t what happened. Actually my nephew set his bag down and started to pick them all up. Organizing them to go back into the box like they were supposed to and I could not have been prouder of that kid. Without prompting he simply did what was right and kind. Remember someone is always watching what actions you take. I hope you set a good example.

I have another person I used to know back in my snowboarding days that told me a story about how he found a wallet while out walking with his daughter. He bragged to me that it had a couple hundred dollars in it which he kept and then threw the wallet into a trash can. He justified his actions by saying the guy gave him a dirty look while he parked his car. I have no idea why this individual thought I would be impressed by his crap story. It makes me sad because this young lady is learning wrong and her Dad is a D-Bag thief. He had such an opportunity to show his daughter how to be the bigger person (if you believe dirty look story, which I do not), how to do the right thing, and let her experience the feeling a person gets when they do the right thing. If you don’t feel shame when keeping the wallet that makes me even sadder.

So don’t sit back and wait for this perfect moment to do something kind. Look for those moments. Seek them out, experience the feeling you get when doing something kind, and become addicted to that feeling. Trust me you are not that busy, you are not that important, and you are robbing yourself every day you put off doing the random acts of kindness. Like just about everything it isn’t only about you. By being lazy you are most likely robbing someone that looks up to you the lesson of being kind simply because it makes you a better person, a person of integrity, and a person of good character. Don’t rob kids of that lesson.

Do kind things. It really is that simple.
