Be Present

How you doing blog readers?? I want to start off saying thank you for supporting my dream and reading my words. I appreciate it very much. I was just out with Annie on a very hot night here in the Queen City. It is 9 PM and still almost 90 outside. I was sweating like crazy throwing the frisbee and had to use the headlight on my Companion (Scooter attachment to wheelchair/ Retail as low as $2,500) to see where to throw it. This insanely bright light also attracted every bug for a 3 block radius so that was super awesome also. I was sweating like a lady of the night in church, bugs all over, and a very happy dog that just wanted me to hurry up and throw the frisbee over and over and over.

I’m a good dog Dad and threw the frisbee many many times for the second time today actually. I put a lot of pressure on myself thinking every blog has to be the most amazing thing I’ve ever written, but that leads to me not blogging often. The person that is hardest and most demanding of me, is me. I set the bar high and will never stop trying to be better everyday. You know my philosophy of helping a stranger everyday without acknowledgement and one you may not know is I want to learn something new everyday. New skill, new word, new friend, new viewpoint, or whatever you want. To me learning is fun. I don’t understand people that refuse to read, refuse to try something different, refuse to talk to someone that disagrees with them (I mean TALK, not scream at or call names), and just grow as a person.

Zooming back from frisbee session I’m annoyed. I’m thinking the heat sucks, bugs suck, the guy in that car sucks, I hate that stupid bird over there, and not even realizing how negative my thoughts had become. I took the corner and saw downtown Charlotte all lit up which is pretty cool at night. My thought right then was “Man it is awesome being alive” and everything changed in an instant. Suddenly it wasn’t so hot, the bugs were gone, I still think the guy in the car sucks (not my fault he is a Ginger), and the bird was cool. His name was… Birds don’t have names or talk dummy. You guys/gals are gullible. ha. The reality was one simple view of the city got me back on the right path.

Life is a struggle. Accept that part of it. Fighting it or thinking somehow it will just get super easy one day is setting yourself up for guaranteed disappointment every time that nameless bird poops on your head. Hey, at least the Ginger didn’t poop on your head. My thought was I’m glad I’m present. What I mean by that is I was willing to let go of the junk and simply be present to recognize the blessings around me. I have an awesome dog, I have a great apartment in a fantastic city, I have a lot of great friends, and a wonderful family that I’m going to see in less than two weeks.

So I remind myself by writing this blog to be present in the moment. Enjoy the time we are blessed with on Earth. Be kind to others, compliment a random stranger on their shirt, shoes, car, hair, or whatever as it will make them stand a little taller and love their moment. A simple “wow, you look great today, that shirt is awesome” can make all the difference in the world to the right person. Hug your family and tell them how important they are to you. You don’t have to wait for a moment, a person, or anything to be a beacon of positivity in your life. BE THE POSITIVE.

It sounds so simple, but many many people on Earth will never get it or practice it.

Appreciate you all,

FknBucky

A little Help

Hello my friends. Things have been crazy lately and I don’t think it is going to be better for some time. The cost of everyday items is out of control. I paid $91 to fill my van up yesterday. Unreal. It used to be $38 not so very long ago. I am a single man (cool chick wanted) that has been blessed with the opportunity to work for myself in a business I love. I’ve worked hard to get where I am and I’m very proud of it. I have been flat broke, homeless, and very worried about how I was going to eat that day. That is a scary place to be and I don’t wish that on anyone ever. That being said I have also always worked. I got a job where I could and a few weeks later I had money in my pocket. Just work. Any job. Millions of people are happy to help a person that shows they are willing to help themselves.

I wanted to keep it short today. I know people that are on or have been on a very strict budget. Doubling fuel cost, crazy food price increases, and the inflation hurts real people right now. I don’t care if you are liberal or conservative. NO ONE should be hungry in this country. Nancy has a $30,000 freezer filled with $12 a pint ice cream. Think she spends her night stressing about your family??? No one is threatening Mitch McConnell to turn off the power due to non-payment because he had to choose between buying food and paying the power bill. They both make me sick.

I want to offer that anyone having trouble buying food to email me or contact me. No judging. No one but me and you will ever know. I don’t need a pat on the back. I filled up a guys gas tank yesterday that tried to sell me a recliner that was in the back of his truck. He asked me if I wanted to buy it for $10 as I was getting out of my van and I quickly said no and made sure he knew I wasn’t interested. Then I heard him talking to someone else saying he needed gas money to get home. I dismissed him so quickly I didn’t see the whole situation. I felt very disappointed in myself blowing off another human in need. I gave him fuel and didn’t even ask his name. It didn’t matter, but the genuine look of appreciation and relief that his plea for help was answered. The horrible situation he was in was over. A random guy in a wheelchair was in position to help and he did.

I hope all of you take a moment to help someone in need. That is the only reason I share that story. The whole point is this. I will buy you groceries. No questions asked. No thank you required. I simply want to help others in need. Don’t watch the news. There are lots of good people in the world so I urge you to pay attention to them. There are ways to send food and that is what I’ll do. Please don’t be a jerk and ask for what you don’t need. I’m not buying you beer or sending cash to anyone.

On the flip side if you are able to help those in need please let me know. I only have so much I can afford to give personally, but I know there are others out there that have the means to help. NO ONE should go hungry. Adult or child. Share this blog. Write your own. Let us share the message that good people are out there and we can help each other.

Be Kind to Everyone.

Honor Them Everyday

I am a bit late posting. Still a great point for you to think about.

Memorial Day. An important one. All days are a blessing, but on this day we as Americans honor the bravest people we will never see or meet. The men that stormed the beach in Normandy is only one example of the incredible sacrifice humans are capable of. I can’t imagine at 18 years old being told to run towards a wall of bullets. Have you ever thought about that?? I’m guessing no. You’re too busy calling strangers racist because they have different opinions than you. Do the world a favor and shelf that BS for today. I think about the kids that gave everything 90 years ago so you can stand on your pedestal and say America sucks. That being said these kids didn’t die for you to blindly follow the other side either.

No wall of bullets to charge today Bucky. How can we make a difference?? Glad you asked. Make your community better. Be a good neighbor, friend, Parent, Spouse, son, brother, daughter that used to be a son, or whatever you want. You can try to be 2nd best Uncle ever, but the top spot is all mine. Just be good to others. Not for recognition, but for the simple fact it is the right thing to do. We can all make a difference. Imagine what your life would be like if everyone on your block cared more about others than they do for themselves.

I have a point that I’m working towards here. Just trying to give you a moment to think about the military people and their families. Family. That is an awesome word. I’ve been blessed with a very big family that is amazing. It is far from perfect, but at the end of the day we are all there for each other. I don’t have children, but I spend as much time as I can with my nieces and nephews. I know a lot of people say they don’t know how to talk with kids. It is easy. Just pay attention to them. That is what we all want in life. To feel important, wanted (think kids, to be wanted as in join in the game), to feel appreciated (again kids – nice pass or catch), and all the rest. Be kind to your kids. They are the ones that will pick your nursing home.

I was playing frisbee with Annie in the park we go to daily for that purpose. We spent about an hour and half today. Lots of rest and water breaks. Right about an hour into it I see a couple dressed up as super heroes pushing their young kids in little plastic cars. Annabel was happy to show off her frisbee skills which are flipping awesome as this family walked by. I asked what was up?? I double checked before yelling out that today is not Halloween. In case you’re not sure either – it is not Halloween today. After I yelled ”Where you going??” I got the best reply. ”To save the world!!” I laughed and told them they made my day.

This parental unit took time to put the cape on, the mask on, and made sure the parent-mobile (like the batmobile, but not) had a full tank. I find this to be awesome. This is what I mean by change the world. Those kids don’t care who the President is, they just want some attention. We make the world better one super hero costume at a time. Ready for the tie in??? We honor the men and women that gave their lives for our freedom, by becoming the best version of us that we can possibly be. You can’t thank a deceased Veteran for their service. We can keep their memory alive by being great people and teaching our kids how to be great people.

It isn’t enough to throw some meat on the BBQ and chug Busch Lights for the day. We need to honor those every single day and not just some weekend to kick off summer. Become an awesome person that makes a difference in the world. Take care of your kids. Teach them they can do anything because they are blessed to have been born in the greatest country in the history of the world. Be a great friend, a great son or daughter, be a great brother or sister so that you send out great vibes every single day. I try to do amazing things for people, but I fall short many times each day, week, year, or decade.

If you never come up short that just means your goals or dreams aren’t big enough. Think about what your philosophy for life is. If I came up and asked you ”What do you want to accomplish in this life??” Do you have an answer?? I think about those that gave everything so that I can be here in America doing whatever I want. I’m free to read any books, educate myself, go where I want, vote for who I want, advocate for things that I want or things I believe would make the world better.

I know I’m a couple days late on publishing this one, but that also makes my bigger point. You don’t get to change your profile pic that says thank you Veterans for a weekend and then tuck that away until next year. Join me in honoring their memory every day by becoming the best you.

I’ve had Enough

Oh man. It has been a while since I pounded on the keyboard. Life has been busy and I get sucked into the trap just like everyone else. Each day being the same as the one before it. Becomes easy and the days click by without us noticing. I need to make time for the things I love, the things I love to do, and most importantly the people I love. Speaking of things I love to do, it is time I had myself a good old fashioned rant. Lots of topics so lets get some.

Finally. 2022. The world is waking up. Great to see. I have dreamed of this moment. What could make you so happy Bucky?? Sports of course. Ahhh sports. We love sports in America. Cheering for the home team, supporting our high school athletes while they learn hard work, team work, put in the time and effort so one day they can have a chance to be a champion. Ooops my bad, that is what used to be. The sports God has heard my prayers. Every night I say ”God, can you please make women’s sports more interesting??” Lets talk real for a minute. Girls are slow, weak, and now we have a solution!! Surprised I didn’t think of it myself.

Want to make womens sports more interesting?? Have men do them!! It is genius. Lets be clear on something. I don’t care about transgender this or that. You do you. As long as you are not hurting a child or someone I care about knock yourself out. The swimmer girl that was born with a penis and was on the mens team for a couple years is a woman now. She is dominating the sport and beating all these stupid girls that bought into the whole ”work hard” and be the best junk. Nope, in 2022 you can be a female athlete that does everything right and still lose. Lucky for me it is only the beginning.

Take the Olympics, athletes will do anything to win, have an edge, or have a way to guarantee them a win. We’ve seen the stories of all kinds of athletes that take drugs, steroids, and all kinds of shady behavior to have an edge. People are messed up. If you haven’t learned that by now then you’re pretty much an idiot. Currently there are two biological men swimming on womens teams at the collegiate level. I’m sure there are more, but they haven’t made headlines yet. Wanting to win is addictive, similar to money, and will consume some people so much they will do anything to get it. Anything.

There are people in this world that will change their name from Sam to Samantha just to win a trophy. When that starts to happen on a large scale (it will, just a matter of time) little girls everywhere are going to be stuck on the sidelines watching a 6’3, 225 lbs, and super cut ”Samantha” take their spot. Soon Shane will be Shana, Joe will be Jessica, Ryno will become Ryna, and on down the line. Let me take a minute to explain something. I don’t care what label you throw at me. Transphobic, misogynist, and well I haven’t made it about race, but give me time. I’ll find a way to make them mad too. I don’t participate in that whole label thing so fire away. I treat everyone I meet like crap equally.

I don’t have the answer. It doesn’t work that way. You have to read and then think about what you’ve read, think about the lessons you’ve learned in life, and apply the logic and wisdom you have to the situation coming up with an opinion. That opinion (yours) doesn’t mean a thing to anyone else, but you had better think it thru real good because people you’ve never met will judge you based on it. Thing about opinions is they can change, but only if you’re allowed to speak in the first place. This cancel BS stops progress, stops people from talking, and when that happens we all lose. Want to stop being racist?? Make friends with minorities. Want to not be homophobic?? Talk with the gays. Yeah it is that easy, but when you stop people from talking it becomes impossible to grow and let your opinion evolve.

Okay off track there. I can’t be the only person on Earth that thinks this situation sucks. Some little girl that bought into the do things right, work hard, practice hard, give up fun time to train, train harder than everyone else, want it more, sacrifice everything only to be 2nd place to a man playing girl. Next year it will be 3rd place. Five years from now she might not even make the team. Why try?? Way I see it we have mens sports and women sports for a very simple reason. Not anymore. The line isn’t blurred society decided to pull out their non-gender penis and peed all over that line.

I can’t think of a more awful thing than robbing little girls of their dreams. Your desire to show everyone how ”woke” you are is flipping stupid. All actions have consequences and right now a whole lot of good people are ignoring those consequences because they are afraid some jerk with screen name SUPER-WOKE will call them names. Well Super-Woke meet FknBucky. I am the antidote to the poison you continually throw around without a care of the consequences and wreckage you leave behind. I say enough.

Do you feel Special? Well do Ya Punk???

I make a killer chicken tortilla soup. During COVID I decided to learn how to cook different things I like from scratch. This includes Apple pie, blueberry cheesecake, beef stroganoff, and some others. I made a quadruple batch of soup on Saturday so I could take it to the rehab hospital I volunteer with. Wanting to take on an extra challenge I made cornbread to go with it from scratch. Everything that goes into the soup is fresh. This batch of soup was phenomenal. I tweaked a bit here and there to see how it worked out and I was very pleased with it.

What is your point Bucky?? Getting there. When I bring the soup in, I make sure there is sour cream, shredded cheese, extra butter, and honey for the cornbread. The fixins are important and I don’t believe in doing things half-assed. Now the rehab hospital is in the process of building a new building next door. A large construction project that will take a couple of years to complete. While at the hospital I sometimes take Annie out and run her up and down the street. Well she runs on the grass and I roll on the pavement. When I’m out there I talk to everyone I come across, it is who I am. The gate “guard” for the construction site is a man named James. He is a cool guy so I say hi to him every time I drive or roll by.

I decided to take him some soup. I had an extra tupperware, I took a large piece of cornbread, put some sour cream in a cup, and some shredded cheese in a bag. All of this was put into a paper grocery bag. While at the hospital I went to visit a few new injuries to talk. My heart breaks for everyone of these people. I know how hard those early days are and there is no sugar coating it. Next time you feel life is not treating you right, stop, take a deep breath, and thank God, stars, Moon, Big Bang Theory, or any idol you worship that you are not laying in a hospital paralyzed, with cancer, or some other horrible thing. Stay thankful for the blessings you do have. Trust me you have a lot of them if you just paid attention. Not the topic today so back to James.

I have a life philosophy of make the people in my life feel special. Everyone yearns to feel wanted, feel appreciated, and just be noticed in the crazy world. It is easy to do, compliment someones shoes, hat, artwork, or whatever. Next tier up is do random kind things like make soup for people. Put a nice photo in a frame and send it out to someone you care about. Send a card not on a holiday, but on “I love and appreciate” you day. That is every day in case you are an idiot. Try to set a goal of just make one person a day feel special or happy. Your life will change if you think of others and not yourself all the time. Think about how people will react to you if you make everyone in your life feel good about themselves!! Yeah, it is kind of selfish to be kind. You have to do this with no strings attached. In your mind if you start counting points or have the “I did this for you so you have to do this back” attitude then just forget it. You suck. Concentrate on that. For real back to James now….. I drove up and gave James the soup with cornbread and fixins. He thanked me, but cars were coming and we kept it short.

Happens the very next day I’m back to the rehab. I promised a grad student I would be the bed bound person doing yoga for a video he is making. It went well, but I did make funny faces when he wasn’t looking. ha. I pulled up to the gate and James came running out. He loved the soup. Now it gets awesome. He took it home to share with his wife. My understanding they have had some very hard times as of recent with some people in their life taking advantage of them. Every time this happens we make that outer shell of ours a little harder to break down. Sad actually, but it happens. James told me his wife broke down to tears when she realized some random guy cared enough to share his soup, cared enough to put the little things in the bag as well, and did it all for the sole purpose of making a fellow human feel special. No thanks, no gratitude, nothing is needed except a ”That soup was awesome” comment the next time I see you.

It took a few minutes of my time to put that bag together for James. To be honest I didn’t remember his name until I gave him the soup and asked what his name was again. I had no clue what he was going thru or what is wife was going thru. Honestly I don’t care and it isn’t my business. What I do care about is my fellow humans. I want to make people feel special every chance I get. I have that ability. WE ALL DO. When is the last time you simply did something for a random person to make them feel like the most important person in the world??? Imagine a world that everyone thought this way instead of how much I can get for me…

As always I don’t want or need praise for doing these things. I do them because I can. Being kind is addictive. Anyone can tell you to be a nice person, but words are crap, show me how to be a nice person, show me how to make others feel special, and then challenge me to do more. I hope everyone who reads this will out do me. Be more kind. Make way more people feel special and then those folks can go make others feel special. That is the world I want to live in.

Ban the Idiots

Happy 2022. I haven’t posted much of anything the last couple months. Hard to be a writer for a living if I don’t write. There are lots of excuses of why I haven’t been getting after it, but they are all crap. I need to push thru the hard times instead of being lazy. Normally I’ll see something, read something, or have a conversation that lights up my brain so much that I want to write about it. For some reason I wasn’t getting that as of late, but lucky for you it just happened.

Books. They are awesome. I LOVE books. I love reading. I started early. I would read Hardy boys books in one night while in grade school. In first grade I was put into the slow reading group. I didn’t want to be in the slow group so that summer I went home and started reading books when I had free time. When I started second grade I told the teacher I knew how to read good now so I didn’t have to be in the slow group. That was that. Later on I was invited to join a group called Flight of the Mind which as for students that were above the current challenges they taught. I went from slow group to gifted group in 2 years by reading.

The librarian knew me and would pick out books for me to broaden my span. The first book she gave me was ”A Day no Pigs would Die” by Robert Newton Peck. It was amazing. The story stuck with me. A young boy who’s father was illiterate was also the pig killer at the slaughter plant in town. He worked hard killing to provide for his family. His father had a heart condition I think and died because he couldn’t read how to open his pill bottle. You read push down and turn, but he saw nothing. Beside him a rock that he tried to smash the bottle open. Everyone in town and the slaughter plant came to his funeral. Hence the title a day no pigs would die because they attended the funeral.

I read that book in 5th grade and I still remember it. Getting to my bigger point. I read an article on Huffington Post about how conservatives are banning books. Liberals do it too. To this I say WTF. The book I talk about above is on the banned list because there is a time that they get a boar (male pig) to come in and get the female pig pregnant. Momma pig said no, but the male took his loving anyway. I guess it could be considered a pig rape. This happens in the real world. I had a registered Durac female pig growing up. I won a ”Grand Champion” ribbon at the fair with her. We decided to bring in a registered durac male to get a litter of purebred piglets. The boar ran Ms. Piggy (I know I named her when I was 9) all over and she died. I came home from school and my parents told me she was dead. I burst into tears and that sucked.

Heaven forbid someone read some real life in a book. NO books should be banned. Don’t like it, don’t read it. I mean seriously freedom of speech is now you can talk, but only say things I want to hear. When was the last time the school bully held you down and made you read a book?? The Kite Runner. Another book/story that is real and hardcore. Life is not easy. There is bad stuff that happens in the real world. These stories teach lessons that help people grow, think, and learn. One of the greatest gifts you can give a child is a love of reading.

This banning books BS is wrong on every level. This is America and we are supposed to be free to do what we want, learn what we want, and become what we want. I say stop it. Stop telling me you are protecting me while taking little pieces of freedom from me and more importantly future generations. It is important to push back on all of them. Liberal or Conservative. The people that do this NEVER STOP. You say okay we will ban this group of books. Do they whiners stop whining?? No. It is all they know. To stay relevant they pick a new group of books to protect you from. I don’t know about you, but I never asked for protection. Who are these people??

The only thing we should be banning is allowing the words BAN and BOOK in the same sentence. Where is this huge problem happening?? I mean you walk down the alley on the way home from school and see the drinkers, the dopers, the Bloods, the Crips, and the most dangerous the ”Force you to read Dr Suess” gang. If you don’t speak up and say “this is crap” it will continue to happen. Don’t ban books, ban these worthless idiots.

Find Some Beauty

Happy Saturday friends. I woke up to 2” of snow again here in Charlotte. It is actually kind of fun and with my ”Companion” power add on I was able to take the same route as most days to walk the pup. She loves the snow. It is fun to watch her. Some of my friends made fun of me for buying her little boots to wear, but all of those friends will now have a rash because I paid a witch doctor to put a curse on them. The truth is who gives a shit what other people think. I’ve spent most of my life not giving an F. Without boots Annie is outside for maybe 5 min, but with them we spent almost an hour outside. She was happy. My face and hands have permanent frostbite and there is a good chance I’m actually frozen to my wheelchair. Dog is stoked though. If worrying about what others think makes you have a miserable 5 minute session in the snow compared to a super fun almost hour in the snow then it would seem an easy choice is upon you.

The other night I found some slushy ice in my apartment parking lot. It was in a part that gets very little sunlight and a good 4’ wide section behind the cars parked there. I was able to ”fishtail” my wheelchair using the scooter wheel thing. It was around 9 PM and I was laughing my ass off. It was so much fun. I turned around and did it again, and again, and again. I finally stopped when I went a little to far and almost flipped out of my chair. I was still laughing though. I’m sure people watching me do this think I’m insane, but I’m used to that.

I am not sure what I want to flip this all into. Getting around in a wheelchair with ice/snow,sleet is not easy. It would be very easy to allow this ruin my day, but I don’t. Why would I allow something I have zero control over ruin my attitude for the day?? I believe we all need to ask ourselves that question. It is okay to smile when the world is crumbling around you. It is okay to love someone full of hate. It is okay to forgive someone without making them feel like complete crap first. The world is full of beauty. It is everywhere. You just have to look for it.

The world is also full of crap. Loads of it. For some reason humans choose to see this world on a daily basis and I don’t understand why. They listen to the crap spewed out on TV. The pandemic, the evil republicans/democrats, the never ending drama, and all the other BS you allow into your head. This next sentence is important so pay attention. Make the choice to see the beauty all around you. Actively look for it instead of jumping on top of the first pile of crap you see. You don’t get it Bucky. There is nothing beautiful in my life. I don’t believe that simply because you are there, you are beautiful, and if you can’t see the beauty then create it.

When you create something beautiful the world gets a little bit better. Then next person that comes into that space will not focus on the pile of crap, but they will see you, the beauty that you are, and focus on the beauty you manifested. They will add to it. Creating a bigger beauty and soon with enough people the pile of crap will no longer exist. Don’t worry about what others are thinking. Be yourself, be kind to others, and actively work to make the world better every single day. When you do this I promise your life will change, the people around you will change, and this is how we change the world.

Don’t wait for someone else to do it. Stop fearing what other people will think. Be silly. Smile and wear the booties. Do some fishtailing in your wheelchair. Train yourself to see the beauty and not focus on the crap.

A Kick in the Ass

Saturday night. I have playoff football playing in the background. I have another wheelchair I need to put together, but keep avoiding it because it is going to be a pain in the butt. I know better than to put things off that need to be done, but it is supposed to snow tomorrow here in Charlotte which means the city will be closed down for a few days. I believe it is going to be a lot of ice so I have no reason to drive around in that crap. I trust myself but I have zero confidence in the other drivers here in the South.

Sad to see Bob Saget pass away. We all grew up watching full house. I still remember seeing Bob do stand up comedy on HBO for the first time. I was blown away at how dirty he was. He was way beyond controversial. A few times I was even thinking ”Damn you can’t say that”, but he did say it and I loved him for it. I love people that say whatever they want. The ones that are always offended can piss off. You’re boring. Nobody wants to walk on your eggshells.

Bob had a chance to make a lot of money being a TV Dad and he took it. Can’t fault him for that although some do. It is different times now though with Instagram, Tik Toc, twitter, and all the other ways dumb drunk kids tell on themselves. Thank God there were no video cameras around when I was young although I was able to make myself memorable most times without pics or video. Only 1 FknBucky on the planet and you knew when you met him. My goal is to continue writing this year and find ways to get my blog out to the masses. It starts with writing more. I get ideas for blogs, but have been lacking in the follow thru department. You can’t chase dreams sitting still.

Whatever it is you want, you have to go get it. Everything is achievable if you are willing to put in the work. You don’t get to live your dream if you crush 12 beers every night. Well unless your dream is to crush 12 busch lights every night. Then you’ve made it friend. I hope your dreams are a bit bigger than this. I mean if you want to dream go for it all!!! 18 Busch Lights a night!! I believe in you. The truth is you have to be working when others aren’t. No matter what it is you desire, I guarantee you there are 100 other humans on Earth chasing the same thing. When you quit at 5 pm everyday, there is someone else pushing till 6 pm, 7 pm, all night.

My dream is to travel and write. I am going to make it. I see myself doing it already. If you can’t see me reaching all of my goals you don’t know me very well. I get down on myself, have hard times, doubt myself, and say F it I’m done. I don’t though. I don’t quit, I have my pity moment and then I get back to the grind. I’m thinking I wrote this blog for myself. I needed a kick in the ass. We all need an extra push from time to time. That is why great friends are important to have or a wonderful wife that is willing to physically harming you to make sure you get out of bed and chase that dream…..

RIP Bob — I’m willing to bet wherever Bob Saget is, he is hitting on Betty White right now. Play on Playa!!

Tragedy and Smiles

I want to share a story with you today. A very important one that I hope will open your eyes, your heart, and help motivate you to count your blessings instead of constantly wishing for more. There is a club that no one wants to join. There is no name for it, it has no leader, and it is guaranteed that all members wish they could unjoin. It is a club of tragedy. Accidents that change the body is the cost of membership. I became a member April 1st, 2002 and have been dealing with it every single day since. This isn’t my story though.

I volunteer because I am able to help and I know that. I offer my everything to the people I talk with at the rehab hospital. I will answer any questions no matter how personal, help with any equipment they may need or want to know about, and I’m happy to talk with family members that want to learn/understand how to best help the loved one that is going thru this physical nightmare. I’ve probably talked with at least few hundred confused/scared people over the years and I’m very proud of that.

Travis and Staci Hoyle gave me permission to use their real names in this blog. Travis was injured a couple months ago and is currently using a wheelchair. I want to express one thing here very strongly. It isn’t your business how it happened. Don’t ask. Ever. It is not okay. Don’t say I’m one of those people that just blurt it out. Travis will tell you if he wants to. Instead do something easy. Talk to him like you would without the chair. He is the same person today as he was 6 months ago. Bust his balls, call him ugly, give him a hard time about driving a Nissan, or whatever else you normally do.

The Hoyle’s have a tough road ahead. It isn’t impossible, but it is hard and they will need that 4 wheel drive of his F150, (it is actually a 2004 Nissan 4×4 Supercharged) to get thru it. “Travis made sure I corrected that.” I have no doubts that they will. This is a strong family from what I have seen. Leave your pity at home. Nobody needs that crap. Bring your happiness, smiles, never give up attitude, and instead of asking for details on what happened say ”I know you got this and I’m here if you need anything.”

I see strength, fear, and determination in Staci and Travis’s eyes. It is okay to have fear because everything is new and we fear what we don’t know. The strength they have has nothing to do with lifting weights. True strength is in a persons mind, it is strong to accept reality, it is strong to smile first thing in the morning and say I can do this, it is strong to remember you’re not the only one going thru this, and most importantly it is strong to acknowledge other people are hurting as well. Pity parties are stupid and worthless so have a strength party. Challenge everyone around you to use the strength God gave them to overcome this obstacle. Once again I will say I have no doubt they will overcome this, but friends and family have a HUGE role to play to make that happen.

Unfortunately bad things happen to great people all the time. It is unfair and makes me want to scream at nothing sometimes. 20 years of membership and yes sometimes I still have moments of extreme weakness and anger. The key is to not live there. Accept the emotions, work thru them naturally, and get back to living your best life. Avoid the ”what if” hole because it simply leads to depression, anger, and regrets. What if I didn’t go, what if I didn’t stop for coffee, what if I didn’t date her, what if what if, and more what if. That is pointless because no matter how much you torture yourself it will not ever change the outcome.

You don’t have to be Travis and Staci to use the advice above. Everyone has hardships in life, hardship plays no favorites, and facing it head on is the right course of action. There is a benefit for Travis on Sunday. I’m told the 300 available tickets sold out very quickly. Money is always welcome and helpful, but kind words and genuine caring is fuel for the fighting spirit alive inside of Travis and Staci. This is not an easy road, but once again it is not impossible. The only thing different is Travis got a lot shorter and won’t be running up any stairs for a while.

Remember as this battle goes on that smiles and laughter are okay. In fact they are a must. Focus on the things that make you smile. Watching your kids succeed at anything. Holding your partner in front of a fireplace on a rainy night. Laughing with your friends while telling old stories. One of my best friends growing up and I would always yell when Welcome Home (Sanitarium) by Metallica came on. It is a random thing, but after my accident while having a tough moment in life that song come over the radio. I was instantly transported back in time and smiled gratefully that I was still alive to enjoy that memory. It is okay to be happy while dealing with tragedy. To this day every time I hear this song, I’m instantly 19 years old again, yelling at the radio with my friends while drinking a Busch Light.

It is easy to find reasons to be unhappy, mean, and ungrateful. True strength is when you put all those aside and find one reason to smile. You only need one. Kids, wife, family, friends, pets, food in your stomach, warm place to sleep, and so on. You can choose to be happy in horrible situations. In life when we are forced into situations beyond our control it is important to concentrate on the one thing we always have control of. Your Attitude. It is easy to smile at the end of the trip, but more important to keep that smile and positive attitude going during the journey no matter how long it may be.

I hope everyone who reads this will share it. You never know who needs to hear the message above. If you can donate money please do and then share this message. If you can’t send money I only ask you share this message so others will see it and be able to help.

Count your blessings. Be grateful for the people in your life. Truly grateful for them.

Sacrifice

Justice for Ryan Cooper. I don’t understand why they haven’t found the person responsible for this insane evil act, but I’m still hopeful they will find the pricks.

The crazy part is I started this blog about four weeks ago.

I have a dozen blogs that are 80% complete. I just need to final edit them, but I get distracted and 4 days later whatever I was writing about becomes old news. A friend sent this article to me wondering if I would write about it. That answer is yes. I don’t know much for details, but this story is true, just happened, tragic, and yet romantic in a weird way. It shows the sacrifice one human is willing to make to ensure the safety of a stranger. I want to say this next point and regardless of your political position I hope you feel the same way. Those 13 service members should NOT have died in Afghanistan. It makes me sick that the incompetence of old people in power caused the needless death of those young military members.

Today I want to talk about Joaquin Romero. You’ve never heard of him. He worked at La Jolla Zip Zoom Zipline in North San Diego County. He was 34 years old and certainly didn’t expect to die as he got ready for work last Saturday. None of us do, but the truth is, at any point of everyday the clock could run out. Stop spending time on trivial BS. Stop hating people you don’t know and in fact stop hating anyone. It is ALL wasted energy. Donald Trump, Joe Biden, and any of the others don’t care that you hate them. They sleep just fine, but you allow them to live rent free in your mind. Someone please tell me how hating Donald Trump all day makes your life more enjoyable. I’ll wait.

Mr Romero was helping a young lady get hooked up on the zip line when she started slipping. He grabbed her harness in an attempt to steady her, but it was too late and they both went about 100 feet down the zip line. This man you’ve never met decided to let go. He knew the 70 foot fall was going to kill him, but he let go anyway. He knew the line would most likely not hold the weight of both of them and made the ultimate decision. This wasn’t like Hollywood where the actor gets back up, but real life where you have no extra lives.

This type of sacrifice blows the mind. I can’t imagine being faced with that decision in the blink of an eye. One moment thinking about how you’ll grab some beers after work, hopefully run into the cocktail waitress you have a crush on, and the next moment you are about to plunge to your end. In a few seconds you find yourself hanging 70 ft above the ground on a cable that can’t hold two people. You can’t call timeout, try again, scream you’re sorry for any past mistakes. Nope, you just let go and fall to your death.

It reminds me of soldiers that jump on a grenade in order to save his brothers next to him. Think he checks to see what color the other men are before making that final jump?? The picture is Kyle Carpenter. He literally jumped on a grenade. The least you can do is to remember his name and recognize people like this exist in real life. This is a debt none of us will ever be able to repay. You can’t even let someone go in front of you at the Walmart check out when they have 2 items and you have a full cart.

There are clearly great people in this world. All around us. You don’t know someones story or history. How many friends do you have?? How many of them know everything about you?? Do you know everything about them??? I’m going to say very few. You’re too busy to listen to someone else’s story. We get so wrapped up in BS that we forget what it is to simply be a good human. The young lady hanging on the zip line that a stranger killed himself to save, do you think she asked who he voted for in the last election???

I talk about Mr Romero and his selfless act. It is insane to think about. I wonder if he was vaccinated?? That is a joke. We have all these nurses, police, firemen and women, grocery store workers that were held up on this pedestal during the lockdown months. They got up and worked every day while others got paid extra money to not work. They didn’t get a bonus. Every couple of days some D-Bag politician would get on TV and talk about how much their sacrifice meant to the rest of us. Liars. They didn’t give a crap. Those same ”heroes” are now the enemy and being fired for not getting the vaccine. It makes me sick to think about.

You have to ask yourself one question. Do I have the strength to sacrifice myself for others?? It doesn’t have to be death. That is only good for one moment. Start small. Sacrifice your time. Listen to someone that doesn’t have anyone to talk to. Cook meals for homeless people on Thanksgiving. Be a foster parent to kids or dogs. Maybe both. Stop and pick up the litter you see. I watched a guy tonight walking his Golden Retriever that was munching on a plastic plant pot. I passed him with Annie, looked back at the street, and sure enough his dog dropped it and he kept on walking. I turned around and picked it up myself because I have character.

Sacrifice your money. Give to those in need. Pay for someones lunch. Do you know how great it feels to randomly pay for someones groceries that are obviously in need of a kind gesture. You got $70 to blow at the bar Friday and Saturday, but no money to help a struggling family??

Start small. Let a car merge in front of you on your way home. Talk to the elderly person two houses down like they are the only person in the world for an hour. Take your dog to a new park or on a walk instead of just opening the door and shoving your fur friend into the back yard. Buy a couple greeting cards and send them to old friends you haven’t talked to in years. Friendships are precious gifts so never take them for granted. In fact one could say ”Be thankful for the friendships you have”.

You have all the power to make your day and someone else’s wonderful. Use it.

Happy Thanksgiving!
