Wind of Love

Wow so yesterday “high” winds ripped apart my parents farm like a five year old kid would dive into a pile of gifts on Christmas morning.  The machine shed is gone.  The horse barn is more gone.  The big maple trees to the west were so destroyed the old man had to make them gone.  I was just there a week ago and we had enjoyed campfires, cold ones, and a lot of great stories right there.  This morning it was all destroyed.

Mashed into something unrecognizable, unbelievable, and certainly overwhelming for my mom and dad to see such destruction on the property they love to take care of together.  The machine shed held dual riding lawn mowers that Mom and Dad got out on the weekends and would mow the acres of grass to give the “kids” (now grandkids) room to play on.  Some of the older ones crossed it to hide behind the horse barn and smoke. Stupid wheelchair tire marks through the grass always narcs one of them out.

So its devastating right.  Not even close.  It is a blessing.  First off, no one was hurt.  Not in my family and not in the surrounding area that I’ve heard about.  Property.  Materials.  Things.  They all mean shit.  Not a damn thing when it comes to what really matters.  All of the kids, brothers, sisters, grandkids, co-workers, and friends came out to clean it all up today.  It wasn’t easy, fun, or what any of them planned to do today, but it had to be done.

This is how the world should work.  Drop what your doing and help.  Don’t sit around and cry that your stuff is ruined.  Get to work cleaning up the mess and then move on thinking about how lucky you are God didn’t punch your ticket and decide to take you with the barn, lawn mower, and machine shed.   Life is extremely short, don’t waste any moments feeling sorry for yourself.

Our family has love and memories which we cherish.  Material things come and go.  Sometimes we can afford nice things, and sometimes we had to pawn them for food.  Doesn’t matter everyday we had a smile and jokes to tell about how much worse it was another time.  Life is hard and having a sense of humor about it makes it bearable always.  I told my dad on the phone “How long am I going to have to hear about your damn horse barn after 3 minutes.  He laughed and told me to “Have a nice–well actually he laughed and said “F U”.

So another story has just happened.  My Dad & Mom will rebuild the buildings with help and time.  There will be hard work and cold beers after the days progress.  In time we’ll forget about the pain and just remember the time spent together cleaning up the mess, and how lucky we are to have just great people in our lives.

When shit hits the fan, don’t waste time complaining about how much got on you.  Look at your friend, laugh at how much got on him, and then smile while you help clean it off him.  This is life.
